Haunted Harewood Group
In the fall of 2009 a couple of friends and a family got together and decided to create a Halloween walk-thru scare called the 'Dungeon Of Doom' in a double carport garage for the local kids in the Harewood community. The result was a four hour show of the unexpected.
Two years had passed since the Halloween walk-thru and many local people were asking the family if they would consider having another event? Since the family had a daughter that attended Georgia Avenue Elementary School letters were always brought home from the child about the community/ educational programs offered and the support that was needed. Once again, the family met with their two friends to discuss the possibility of another Halloween event. However this time the project would be aimed as a fundraising event to support the Georgia Avenue Elementary School and the proceeds would be used as discretionary funds for children with unexpected or emergency needs. Since the event would be held in Harewood (South End Nanaimo) by a small little group the name was formed as the 'Haunted Harewood Group'. The result from the event was outstanding, many local businesses became involved, Shaw TV provided coverage and additional news was given by the newspapers. Today, there is approximately 12 volunteer members and every year many other individuals come to join in for a short or long period of time such as painting, donating, building, finding props and acting during the event. The impact has brought the community closer together and has affected the lives of parents and children in Harewood. |
